No Pro-AM golf tourney
By: Garry Chirwa
The popular annual golf showpiece, the Lake Malawi Pro-Am golf tournament, will not take place this year because the organisers could not raise a sufficient number of team sponsors.
Tournament chairman Andrea Bizzaro confirmed the development on Wednesday attributing the sudden turn of events to the current poor economic climate.
“Due to the very poor state of our economy, it has not been possible to raise a sufficient number of team sponsors this year to allow us to go ahead with the tournament,” said Bizzaro.
“But despite the cancellation we are hopeful that next year, with a better economical environment, we should be in a position to restart the event. There is a serious intention to continue organising the tournament on an annual basis and we are hoping that the state of the economy will improve for the better next year.”
Bizzaro also said as a consolation, the organisers are planning to stage an individual tournament for local golfers in September.
“We will be targeting local amateurs but that will also depend on the availability of funding and we will also try to arrange with SuperSport TV to beam the event,” he summed up.
The Pro-Am golf tournament was introduced in 2000 and apart from local amateurs, it also attracts professional golfers from South Africa.
Dimon Malawi of Lilongwe are the current champions having won last year’s event.
