College publishes research journal
By: Mc Donald Chapalapata
The Department of Aquaculture and Fisheries Science at the Bunda College of Agriculture, a constituent college of the University of Malawi, has for the first time published a journal, Aqua-Fish Technical Report, containing research papers on the fish industry from the department.
One of the lecturers in the department, Shinsuke Morioka, said in an interview on Friday that the publishing of the journal would help the public to access information of the research conducted by the department.
Morioka said many students could not afford to publish their research papers in international journals because they are expensive. Getting one’s paper published in an international journal can cost as much as $500.
“This journal is going to be circulated among Southern Africa Development Community (Sadc) countries and this is a big motivation for students in the department,” said Morioka.
He said the articles in the journal, funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica), are from lecturers and technical staff of the department.
“But students are encouraged to do research papers and if they are good, they will be given a chance to have their papers published,” he said.
Morioka said the journal would be used by future fish scientists to improve on the discoveries by the research that the department has done.
Jica has been assisting the Aquaculture and Fisheries Science department since it became independent of the Animal Science department in 1999. It has constructed classrooms, laboratories and a dormitory apart from repairing the Bunda reservoir.
