Barloworld Equipment (Malawi) and Lions Club of Limbe on Saturday donated 10 metric tonnes of maize flour valued at K340,900 to orphans in Ntcheu to finalise a series of donations to orphans in Karonga, Mangochi and Ntcheu districts.
Ntcheu-based Christian Orphanage Outreach Mission (Coom) patron Evelyn Jesman, in her vote of thanks, said Coom does not take the Barloworld and Lions gesture for granted because the donors could have easily assisted children around Blantyre.
“Our problems range from lack of food and soap to salt and clothing so we humbly ask you to remember us again next time,” said Jesman during the presentation ceremony at Bemvu CCAP mission at Kampepuza.
Lions Club of Limbe vice president James Gwaza, whose club sourced 26 metric tonnes of flour valued at K900,000 from Barloworld, said the Lions will continue to assist orphans but encouraged them to scale-up their income generating activities to achieve self reliance.
Barloworld Equipment rental and marketing manager Richard Mgoli said in an interview as a company operating in Malawi, Barloworld joined hands with the Lions to assist solve problems faced by Malawians including HIV/Aids which has raised the challenge of orphans.
“The situation of orphans is really pathetic and to be a good corporate citizen we believe it’s important to play a part in uplifting fellow citizens as we are doing,” said Mgoli.
Jesman said Coom assists orphans in Ntcheu and was formed after a needs assessment survey in traditional authorities Kwataine, Champiti, Makwangwala, Mpando and Njolomole where there are over 2,000 orphans.
She said Coom established village committees which look after the children, ensuring they are in good health and are attending school.
Barloworld Equipment and Lions Club of Limbe two weeks ago presented six metric tonnes to Chembe Aids Project at Cape Maclear in Mangochi before presenting to another orphanage in Karonga last weekend.
