by: Garry Chirwa, 2/7/2003,

British American Tobacco (Malawi) Limited will later this month set out on a serious fund-raising drive in aid of the national soccer team’s preparations for the Africa Nations Cup group qualifier against Nigeria scheduled for next month.
The company’s promotional agents, Top Advertising said Thursday that BAT was concerned with the financial situation at Fam which has delayed the Flames’ camping ahead of this crucial showdown.
Top Advertising’s promotions manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda said BAT has lined up a number of popular bands to perform starting from February 28 in Mzuzu.
“Having read in the paper about the critical financial situation at Fam, we sat down to see how we can assist to raise funds for our national team as they prepare for the tough game against Nigeria.
“We felt we have a role to play in assisting the national team more especially as they prepare for the daunting task against one of the continental forces,” Nyirenda said.
He said the fund-raising dances will also include other activities to generate more funds.
“The shows will be held throughout the country and we will ask venue owners to reduce their cut so that we can raise enough money for our team,” he said.
He said BAT will foot all the costs for advertisement and hiring bands.
