Police in Kasungu have arrested two people for attempting to sell their niece and sister, respectively, at K450,000 each to businessmen at the boma because they wanted money to buy food, it has been confirmed.
According to the Police, Matemba Phiri, 42, wanted to sell his 20-year-old sister Enert Phiri from Kavawa Village in T A Nsinja in Lilongwe while Davie Phiri, 39, wanted to sell his 23-year-old niece Lufilla Banda from Songiso Village in Sub Chief Chisinga in Kasungu.
The two were arrested at the boma last Thursday while holding discussions with some businessmen whom they thought would need to use the women to boost heir businesses through witchcraft.
Kasungu Police Officer In-Charge Grinja Mnembo confirmed that the two suspects, both from Chimatira village in TA Kaomba’s area, were arrested on a tip by some people who were offered the women.
He said two appeared in court on Wednesday and are currently on full remand at Kasungu Prison awaiting charges of attempting to commit a crime.
A police source in Kasungu said the two suspects admitted that they wanted to sell their relatives because they wanted money to buy food because their relatives are not assisting them since they got married in Lilongwe where they stay.
The source said the two were demanding K450,000 for each person and were targeting businessmen who they thought would need the women to boost their businesses. The suspects are alleged to have offered to kill the relatives through witchcraft.
A court clerk at Kasungu Magistrate court, who sought anonymity, said in a separate interview on Thursday that the two suspects were also expected to appear in court later in the day.
