By: Our Reporter | |
Malawi’s disability rights activist Rachel Kachaje has been elected president of a 10-member Southern African Federation of the Disabled (Safod) for a four-year term of office. The Federation of Disability Organisations in Malawi (Fedoma) said in a statement yesterday that Kachaje becomes the first woman to hold the Safod presidency in the region. Kachaje, elected during a Safod general meeting in Botswana last week, has taken over from Lesotho national Moses Masemene, who has since been appointed his country’s minister of justice. Kachaje has two deputies — a Mr. L. Mzimande from South Africa (development) and a Mrs. F. Cherera of Zimbabwe (responsible for women and gender). Swazi national, a Mr. B. Jere, was voted honorary treasurer and secretary and Namibia’s Mrs. X. Ncube was elected deputy chairperson (women’s affairs) with Messrs. W. Chimidza (Botswana) and M. Maholela of Lesotho as committee members. |
