A businessman in the northern city of Mzuzu was on Friday arrested for allegedly being found in possession of 83 cartons of government drugs.
According to Karonga Police public relations officer Enock Livason, Mushanga Stain Nkosi, 55, of Tombolombo Village, Traditional Mmbelwa in Mzimba was arrested at Nyasa, a junction to Tanzania on the Karonga-Songwe Road.
“He had 36 cartons of quinine and chlorohydrate injection, 46 cartons of the rare high blood pressure drug, insulin, and 12 bottles of chlorophenical capsules which he concealed in a big carton,” Livason alleged.
He claimed Nkosi went to Shire Bus Lines depot in Mzuzu with a big carton as a parcel to be delivered to someone in Karonga.
“He processed everything and was given a ticket for the parcel. Surprisingly, he also boarded the same bus that carried his parcel but the bus officials did not know or suspect anything.
“Now this bus which he boarded goes to Songwe first before dropping off all the parcels at the boma and as it proceeded to Songwe the man dropped off at Nyasa. He told the conductor that he had a luggage which turned out to be the big carton,” he added.
Livason explained that a scuffle ensued between Nkosi and the conductor of the bus as he argued that the parcel was destined for the boma and should be collected from there while the businessman insisted that it was his parcel and wanted to go with it.
“The conductor and driver became suspicious and alerted us. We quickly came to the scene and discovered that the man was in possession of government drugs. There were all these cartons sealed in one big carton,” he said.
Livason further said when questioned, Nkosi denied that the drugs were his but had just been sent by a person he refused to identify to sell in Tanzania. According to Livason, Nkosi could not also say where he got the drugs from.
“But we suspect they should be from the Central Medical Stores but we are continuing with our investigations until we get to the bottom of the matter. As for now Nkosi is in our custody waiting to appear in court,” said the police PRO.
