Eagle Beaks, who saved themselves from Premier League-relegation on Saturday by stunning title contenders mighty MTL Wanderers 1-0 in Lilongwe, face the same music if Fam implements its threat to deduct three points for fielding two barred players.
Beaks, together with MTL Wanderers and Escom United, were fined K50,000 each last week for refusing to release players to the national Under-20 team which is currently in South Africa for this year’s Cosafa Youth Championship.
The clubs were told not to field the players in their next games until they pay the fine or would forfeit three points.
Fam said Sunday it will deduct three points from the Lilongwe-based Malawi Police Service (MPS) side for fielding defender Harry Nyirenda and midfielder Sadani Mangwere in the game against the nomads before they had paid the K50,000 fine.
Fam general secretary Yasin Osman said by not paying the fine and going ahead to use the players in question, the club disobeyed Fam.
“I have heard that they have not paid and because of that they will lose three points and get relegated. We are using the law here,” he said.
Fam’s threat means the club now faces the chop again—a development which will now save another relegation-bound club Sammy’s United.
The nomads paid the fine for refusing to release Gerald Chimbaka.
Reacting to the development, Beaks chairman Pike Mphaka said Sunday his club did not pay the fine because it wants Fam to call it to a discussion table “and not just rush to make decisions without getting our side”.
“We don’t know how and why they do it but we believe they should follow the law. They should have views from both sides,” he said.
Asked why they fielded the players, the Beaks boss said: “We did so because they are our key players and not to use them during a game would be very bad for us.”
On Super Escom, who had already finished their games when Fam meted out the fine, Osman said the punishment will be carried forward to the next season.
“Fifa and Caf do it that way, so we are also going to do it the same way,” he said.
Escom are insisting they will not pay the fine because their players Victor Nyirenda and Chipiliro Jose failed to join the Under-20 on personal reasons.
