The National Library Service (NLS) will on Friday host an HIV and Aids book fair at the Lilongwe Community Centre to give people access to literature on the pandemic.
Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe on Friday, National Librarian Gray Nyali said the fair is part of a five-year project NLS is running to strengthen resource centres throughout the country.
Nyali said the National Aids Commission (Nac) is funding the project to the tune of K21 million and K11 million has been set aside for the purchase of books on HIV and Aids.
“The fair will be marked by displays, presentations by experienced medical personnel like Professor George Liomba of College of Medicine and some performances,” said Nyali.
He said the material to be displayed on the day will be distributed to resource centres that NLS has established across the country.
Chair of the technical committee of the fair Alfred Msadala said most of the material to be displayed on the day will be in Chichewa to enable many Malawians understand the messages.
“We call upon Malawians to come and patronise the fair because they will learn a lot through the material that will be displayed on the day,” said Msadala.
Nyali noted that there is an improvement in the reading culture in the country as evidenced by the high demand of books in all the branches of NLS.
NLS is expected to hold similar book fairs in the Northern and Southern regions in the years to come, according to Nyali.
