Member of Parliament for Zomba Central Yunus Mussa on Saturday had a rude awakening when angry UDF supporters chased him from a rally held in Balaka to welcome MP and musician Lucius Banda following his release from prison where he spent two months.
UDF district governor for Balaka Anafi Juma confirmed the incident in an interview on Saturday, saying Mussa’s presence angered the party’s supporters because they viewed him as a double-faced individual.
“He was simply not welcome. We are not sure about his true identity. Today he says this, tomorrow that. We don’t want a person like him in our midst,” said Juma.
An executive committee member for the district, who opted for anonymity, chipped in: “Everyone was annoyed to see him here. He actually came onto the platform and made himself comfortable on a chair, but as soon as he sat down people started shouting that he should go.
“We, as leaders, had no option but comply with the people’s demand. He was escorted back to his car and the crowd calmed down when they saw him leave.”
Mussa could not be reached for comment Sunday.
The rally was attended by UDF national chairman Bakili Muluzi and his wife Shanil.
