University should seek solutions to unnecessary deaths
Once again the University of Malawi is in grief following the drowning on Saturday of two Chancellor College students who went to relax in Mangochi. A day that started with a promise of bags of fun ended with the stunning reality of rivers of tears. A farewell party was irredeemably disturbed.
It is not the first time the university is losing students to the bellies of the beautiful mere that is Lake Malawi and the fact that such incidents keep recurring points to a problem of learning from past mistakes or experiences. Are all these accidents fully inevitable?
Past incidents of this nature have been linked to the influence of alcohol but one would assume that was not the case this time given the fact that Saturday’s tragedy took place at a religious function. Be that as it may, what then is the problem?
University students want their freedom in whatever they do but cases like this could easily tempt officials to bring in some measure of control over our liberated young minds who put their lives at risk every time they down to the lake. The country cannot continue to lose lives of important people this way.
One hopes time has come for genuine soul-searching within the university set-up to ensure that Saturday’s case becomes the last. The cost of these deaths goes beyond the immediate families of the deceased. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
