Board vehicle stolen
By: Patrick Msowoya
A top official for the Northern Region Water Board was on Monday abducted by five gunmen who went away with a Toyota Twin Cab vehicle registration number NB1371, he was driving.
Timothy Mkandawire, Financial Controller of the Board, was stopped at gunpoint at the city’s low density Chimaliro area and was later abandoned 25 kilometres away along the Kafukule road, near Ekwendeni.
Both police and the board have confirmed the incident. Police spokesman George Chikowi said Mkandawire, 31, and his wife were driving from the site of a house he is constructing in the location when the robbers attacked.
The armed men forced him out of the driver’s seat before they drove away with him, leaving his wife stranded behind.
According to the Board’s acting general manager Mwiza Mtawali, the vehicle was stolen at around 1800hrs. Police who were tipped of the incident later found Mkandawire unhurt along the said road.
Mkandawire told police that he saw three armed men on his side when he was forced by the robbers to stop the vehicle while his wife said she saw other two armed men on her side.
The police are said to have followed the vehicle together with water board officials up to the Malawi border with Zambia but they could not find it.
