Benbow quits as squash boss
by: Leonard Sharra, 5/5/2006, 6:22:55 AM

Squash Malawi has accepted the resignation of its president Gordon Benbow, who is reported to have expressed his intention to step down during the 2006 Commonwealth Games held in Melbourne, Australia.
Benbow was among the officials and players affected by government’s directive to bar non-Malawian passport holders from participating in the Games. Sources within the squash fraternity have linked his resignation to the government’s move.
“My resignation has nothing to do with the government directive. I have no problem with government’s policy and I just want to have time for my family. I am also deputy headmaster at St. Andrews International High school and Squash was taking a lot of my time,” said Benbow, who travelled with the Malawi squash side to Melbourne as coach.
Squash Malawi general secretary Edward Mponda refused to be drawn into speculation that Benbow had stepped down because of the government’s directive only saying: “He says he wants to concentrate on his job and spend time with his family but has offered to be available, when the board needs his services.”
Mponda said the Squash executive would soon call for an annual general meeting, which will amongst other things appoint a new president. “We are due for our AGM and it will be up to members to confirm acting president Thom Kavinya as full time president or elect another president,” said Mponda.
Bernbow has been very instrumental in the development of squash in the country.
