Barely a week after Parliament passed the Domestic Violence Bill, a man in Lilongwe has been arrested for allegedly stabbing his wife in the stomach which led to the exposure of her intestines.
Mary Chiwede, from Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe, in an interview with The Nation at her bed at Kamuzu Central Hospital (KCH), said her husband, Sindikani, suddenly stabbed her last Wednesday night.
Chiwede explained that relatives and neighbours tied a cloth around her waist to prevent the intestines from falling, took her to police before being rushed to KCH theatre.
“I was very surprised by the act. Of course during the day he had threatened to kill me, but I did not take him seriously. I thought it was a joke because we had not quarrelled,” said Chiwede, requesting to lie down as she could not stand the pain.
Lying on the bed, Chiwede went on to explain that doctors have advised her not to eat nor drink anything because her intestines and liver were damaged.
But she said it was yesterday when she was told to eat light food.
According to Chiwede, Sindikani is currently in police custody at Matapila Police Post.
Chiwede claimed at Police Sindikani said he committed the act under the influence of alcohol.
Chiwede, 25, has two children from another man. She said she married Sindikani in February.
Central Region police public relations officer Moyenda Chitimbe asked for more time to get details of the case. He could not be reached later.
There has been many cases of gender-based violence of late prompting government to speed up processing of the long-awaited Domestic Violence Bill which was received with mixed reactions from different quarters including Parliament. The Bill was passed last week and is awaiting President Bingu wa Mutharika’s signature to become law.
