World Vision tackles HIV and Aids
by: Emmanuel Muwamba, 5/4/2006, 5:06:56 AM

World Vision International on Friday conducted an open day on HIV and Aids for youths at Satemwa ground at Mbiza in Mulanje where the district’s Director of Planning and Development David Chinyanya said he was worried with the HIV prevalence rate in the district.
Chinyanya said the 20 percent HIV and Aids prevalence rate of Mulanje leaves a lot to be desired adding that “the district needs to do something urgent to sensitise people on the prevention from the pandemic.”
Mulanje is ranked third on HIV and Aids prevalence in the country but its rate has dropped from 27 percent in the 2000 Malawi Health Demographic Survey (MHDS) to 20 percent in the 2004 MHDS.
He observed that the open day that WV conducted to sensitise the youths was a right forum where the youths could learn more on how they can prevent contacting the deadly virus.
WV Agriculture coordinator for Ntiza ADP Black Kamwaza said he was overwhelmed with the response youths are showing on how they can prevent contacting the virus.
He said his organisation is also equipping the youths with various life skills in order to keep them busy and eventually they can generate income from what they make.
Kamwaza also urged teachers to conduct themselves properly so that youths can emulate from their good work.
