Super League of Malawi (Sulom) has said the Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) branded uniforms which all the teams are supposed to don in all league games this season as part of the sponsorship agreement, are not yet ready.
All the 16 teams were supposed to get two sets of uniforms each at the start of the league, but so far only defending champions Big Bullets and MTL Wanderers have received a set of uniform each.
Super Escom, Red Lions and Admarc Tigers confirmed on Wednesday that they were forced to look for their old sets of uniforms at the 11th hour after establishing that the new uniforms that were pledged by the sponsors, would not be available.
Lions’ public relations officer Captain Humphrey Theu said: “We were told that we would receive two new sets of uniforms for home and away) before the kickoff of the league, but until last Friday we did not get any communication from Sulom and were forced to look for our old set of uniform which we wore when we faced Cobbe Barracks and Wanderers,”
Escom’s team manager Simon Mkandawire said his club only realised that the uniforms were not ready on the day of the game against Bullets.
“I drove to Sulom on Monday morning to inquire about the uniforms where I was told that they were not ready. At least Sulom should have had the courtesy to inform clubs about the situation in advance,” said Mkandawire.
However, Sulom general secretary Chris Kamphinda Banda cleared the air on the issue yesterday saying the uniforms have not yet been distributed because they are still being branded.
“The uniforms and other equipment are still being labelled with the sponsor’s logo, but they will be distributed to the clubs soon, hopefully they will start using them this weekend,” said Kamphinda Banda.
Asked why Bullets and nomads got a set of their uniforms each and not the other teams, the Sulom spokesman said: “Bullets and Wanderers got a set of uniform each because they had to wear them in the Honours Cup game, it was a special arrangement. But they too have not yet received the other sets.”
According to the revised Sulom Rules and Regulations, any team that does not don the sponsor’s branded uniform will be fined K10,000.
