Just six months after The Nation reported the ordeal of a Dowa woman who had both her hands chopped off by a jealous husband, another woman this time in Dedza will never enjoy the pleasure of having two hands after her husband mercilessly chopped off her left arm in similar circumstances recently.
The woman is now nursing the stump at Dedza hospital.
According to Dedza police the victim, Enelesi Maunde used to sell potatoes at one of the seasonal markets along the M1 road and normally got home at dusk or slightly later everyday.
Her distrusting husband, William Kam’mayani, 38, however suspected she was seeing other men and threatened he would deal with her if he discovered she was double-crossing on him.
As misfortune had it, on the fateful day the woman left the market a bit late and on the way home was joined by the man suspected to be her secret lover.
Police reports indicate that no sooner had Kam’mayani emerged from the bush - which he used as a vintage point to catch the two - wielding a panga and seething with rage than the secret lover bolted for dear life.
“With one swift stroke Kam’mayani hacked his wife’s left arm with a panga and it fell off instantly leaving only a bleeding stump. She fainted on the spot as the husband rushed home, packed his clothes and those of his wife, took a little flour and vanished from the village. We have not located him since,” Dedza police spokesperson Franklin Gausi said.
Police have since intensified search for the runaway husband who risks a maximum sentence of 14 years imprisonment with hard labour if apprehended and convicted.
Kam’mayani and his wife hail from Dauya Village Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.
