Blantyre-based lightweight boxer Wilson ‘Hardhitter’ Masamba who thought Liwonde-based boxer Philemon ‘Nkhakamila’ Banda was going to be a walkover surely proved himself wrong when he struggled to beat his opponent in a professional ten-round non-title bout staged at the BAT Ground on Sunday.
The bout, which was organised by Mulanje Last Boxing Promotions (MLBP), saw Masamba dazzling Nkhakamila on unanimous decision [3-0] from judges—Andrew Muyaya, Andrew Jailosi and a Mr. Katola.
Masamba made a good start, landing hard punches on his opponent but Nkhakamila came back in the second and third rounds with his long-range jabs.
However, Masamba’s ring mettle threw Nkhakamila to the canvas twice—in the third and fifth round as Nkhakamila fought on, using his left uppercuts and right angle blows.
But it was Masamba’s famous ducking and dancing skills which made it a bout to remember. He deserved victory for straight and accurate blows.
After the fight, the visibly exhausted Masamba acknowledged it was not easy to beat Nkhakamila.
“I said before the fight that I was going to beat Nkhakamila, but many people did not believe me. What I want now is for our promoters to organise international bouts for me, I don’t want to fight Nkhakamila I am tired of beating him.”
Nkhakamila accepted blamed the judges for the loss.
“Why did all the judges come from Blantyre like there are no judges in the other clubs or districts? I am not happy. Referees from where I come from should have also be considered,” he complained
Masamba had challenged Nkhakamila to duel after the latter TKOed Masamba’a elder brother in January. Wilson also defeated Nkhakamila on unanimous decision in another ten-round professional in August last year.
