Mob beats driver to death | |
By: Patrick Msowoya | |
An angry mob at Chiondo Lagoon in Karonga on Wednesday beat a McConnell driver to death after he accidentally ran over an ox-cart and killed the driver on the spot, Northern Region Traffic Police Officer Jacob Kakhongwe confirmed yesterday. The driver was identified as Martin Gamera and was driving a Mazda van registration number BK 7314. The ox-cart driver was identified as Emmanuel Mwenetanga, 20. An angry mob from surrounding villages descended on the van driver and beat him up to death. Yosefe Mwenetanga, a brother to the late Emmanuel, sustained a fracture on his right hand and was admitted to Karonga District Hospital. Anderson Katenga, a manager at McConnell in Mzuzu, said Gamera was transferring a McConnell employee to Karonga from Mzuzu. He came from Mulanje but was living at Chiputula Township in Mzuzu. “We have made transport arrangements to transfer the deceased to his home in Mulanje” said Katenga. Meanwhile, Police have condemned the villagers for taking the law into their own hands, saying once identified, the culprits will face the law. “This is what makes drivers run away when involved in such accidents,” said Kakhogwe. |
