MCP president John Tembo has challenged President Bingu wa Mutharika to come out openly on the issue of government of national unity instead of meeting individuals secretly.
“The issue of GNU has never been brought to our party, either caucus of MPs or the national executive. It is not on our agenda. I have told the people the President has been sending that if he wants to meet me, he must make it public,” said Tembo
Tembo was addressing journalists at his Area 10 residence in Lilongwe on Tuesday.
He accused some senior members of DPP and cabinet ministers of secretly meeting members of his party coaxing them to join their party, boasting that after the meetings, his members ring him and tell him what was discussed.
He refuted reports that about 23 MPs of his party have ditched him, saying the party is still intact as manifested in the recent sitting of the National Assembly.
“The reported exodus of MCP MPs is not true. I know there are puppets, even the one ringing them, to ask them to join the DPP and after speaking to them, they ring me.
“Some of them are invited to some ministers houses, even one house around here, the owner of the house does not know that the servants in his house are not all his,” said Tembo.
Commenting on the recent announcement by his first vice president Peter Chiwona that he had joined the DPP, Tembo said the party is still waiting for his resignation letter.
“As of now, we are waiting for his letter of resignation. I respect Dr. Chiwona very much. The last communication I had with him was when he was in hospital on oxygen. I did not even know he was well,” said Tembo.
Tembo said those who confused the party are now out and piled at the DPP, which is good riddance on the part of the party.
“Those who used to confuse MCP are now heaped at the DPP. If a person piles goats, sheep, and snakes in one room, what do you expect?” he added.
DPP publicity secretary Hetherwick Ntaba dismissed Tembo’s allegations that some members of DPP are courting his MPs to join the party as mere speculation and fabrication, challenging that he should mention names of those coaxing and the coaxed MPs.
Ntaba said a lot of MCP members are unhappy with its leadership, the reason he said has led to some members ditching the party such as Chiwona and warned that more are yet to leave.
“A number of people are unhappy with what is happening in the party. Would it not be much honourable for him to mention the names of those coaxing and the ones who rejected?” queried Ntaba.
