A Limbe police officer in Blantyre accidentally shot himself dead on Wednesday when he was trying to arrest gamblers in the township.
According to Southern Region Police public relations officer Rhoda Manjolo, the officer Constable Christy Bitala was on patrol Wednesday morning with other officers when they got a tip that people were gambling behind Escom House. They raided the place but the culprits fled.
And as he was bending to collect the cards left behind he accidentally pulled he trigger of the rifle he was holding around his arm.
“We do not know whether the deceased had set the rifle but when the trigger was pulled, he got shot in the jaw and died on the spot,” said Manjolo.
She added that Bitala was a well-trained police officer who knew how to handle a rifle.
“What happened was an accident. It does not mean that he did not know how to handle a gun,” said Manjolo.
According to Manjolo, burial will take place at the deceased’s home in Lilongwe.
