National refs body on Fam’s neck
by Garry Chirwa, 18 February 2005 - 14:14:18
The National Referees Committee (NRC) has accused the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) of deliberately going round it in the allocation of referees to officiate Super League games and has threatened to boycott the weekend games.
NRC’s general secretary Mike Mambo said on Thursday that his committee was surprised that Fam has instructed Sulom to deal directly with regional referees bodies through Fam’s referees sub-committee, bypassing the national referees body.
“When we contacted Sulom yesterday (Wednesday), we were shocked to learn that they had been advised not to deal with us but rather our regional bodies and that is abnormal because we never got any communication from Fam on why they have come up with a decision.
“And if no proper explanation is given by tomorrow (today), then we will instruct the regional committees to stay away from the weekend games,” warned Mambo, adding “if there is something then Fam should have had the courtesy to contact us.”
However, Fam general secretary Roosvelt Mpinganjira while confirming the development, denied the allegations that the association had bypassed the national referees body.
“It is true that we told Sulom to be dealing directly with the regional referees committees through our refs sub-committee but it is not true to say we sidelined the NRC.
“We actually communicated to the NRC the reasons why we have taken such steps—it is because the relationship between the NRC and Central Region referees has not been rosy because of what happened at the elections where refs from the Centre were sidelined from the national body.
“And we felt until such a time when the differences will be resolved, the regional committees themselves should be handling the allocations because in the present circumstances, it would be difficult for refs from the Centre to work comfortably with the national body, there is nothing sinister about the move and they know it,” stressed Mpinganjira.
