Military soccer giants Red Lions are reported to be shifting from their den in Zomba and relocate to the Capital City Lilongwe where the Malawi Defence Force headquarters is based, sources from the outfit have confided in the Nation Online.
A source from Cobbe Barracks in Zomba said the suggestion to relocate the Zomba-based Lions to the Capital has been made following the promotion of Cobbe Barracks into the Super League.
“It doesn’t make sense to have two teams from one barracks playing in the Super League. After all Red Lions is the national army side while Cobbe Barracks belongs to 1MR (First Battalion of the Malawi Defence Force) which is based in Zomba. Cobbe are the owners of the place,” said the source who refused to be named.
Army spokesman Colonel Clement Namangale said denied knowledge of the issue.
“The issue of these two teams has not been discussed at top management level, therefore, there is nothing official related to this matter. May be it’s being discussed at the clubs’ management but nothing has reached headquarters,” said Namangale.
Namangale confirmed that Cobbe Barracks were the rightful owners of the ‘den’ being used by Red Lions “though we have other units there like administration. Red Lions was created as the national army side.”
Red Lions team manager Staff Sergeant McHodges Chunga refused to comment.
“I can’t comment because we are just hearing it as a rumour. There is nothing official and if there is anything official, I will not be the competent person to comment on the issue,” said Chunga who is also Flames’ team manager.
The Lions stormed the Capital City over the weekend to size up with the city’s giants Silver Strikers and Civo.
Against the bankers on Saturday, the Lions took a first half lead through striker Mike Chakuamba but the hosts cancelled the lead in the second half through their new recruit from MTL Wanderers Gift Makoloni.
The following day the visiting Lions wounded Civil Service United (Civo) 1-0 in a tough game played at Lilongwe Community Centre ground. Henry ‘Bimbo’ Kaliati headed in the lone goal midway in the first half.
Kaliati had what would have been the Lions second goal disallowed in the dying minutes as his colleague appeared to have pushed a Civo defender before laying a pass to Kaliati.
