Mwafulirwa’s move to France flops again
by Garry Chirwa, 04 February 2005 - 12:20:39
Gangling forward Russell Mwafulirwa’s scheduled move to French second division side Angers SCO has again failed following doubts surrounding his level of fitness.
Mwafulirwa’s manager Ben Chiwaya said from Johannesburg, South Africa on Thursday that Mwafulirwa was supposed to join the French side during the transfer window which was closed on Monday.
“There was already an agreement in place that Russell would join Angers last month but unfortunately he was plagued by injuries for the better part of the first round in which he was reduced to a sideshow.
“Apparently the French club had been monitoring his progress and communicated to Jomo Cosmos’ owner and coach Jomo Sono that the club had serious doubts on the player’s level of fitness,” explained Chiwaya.
Chiwaya said the knee injury affected Mwafulirwa’s performance but was quick to point out that he is picking up.
“He is alright now and doing quite well and Angers have assured that they will continue to monitor his performance until the end of the season.
“It is not that the door has been shut completely. There are still chances of signing him at the end of the season,” said Chiwaya.
The locally-based talent scout however said Mwafulirwa was very understanding and was not bitter with the news.
“Obviously any player would be greatly disappointed to lose a rare chance of plying his trade in Europe, especially when an outright contract is on the cards and I am sure Russell was greatly affected with the latest development but he took it as a man.
“And I am absolutely certain that he will work very hard so that they should consider him for next season.”
Mwafulirwa also failed to put pen to paper at Angers in September last year having arrived in France late.
The tall striker arrived in France on the day the transfers were closing and the team could not process his registration because of the time factor.
