Suspended UDF deputy secretary general Paul Maulidi, who was lawyer for party secretary general Kennedy Makwangwala in a case where he is answering charges of assault and malicious damage, has dumped his client.
Makwangwala, currently on bail, is accused of assaulting Ntcheu Bwanje South MP Marjorie Ngaunje and damaging vehicles during the run up to the May 2004 general elections last year.
The case, which was supposed to be held at Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, failed because Maulidi who is believed to be on government’s side in the ongoing UDF feud, advised the court and the state that he has withdrawn from the case.
Efforts to speak to Makwangwala and Maulidi failed on Thursday because their phones were out of reach but principal state advocate Pacharo Kayira, who is representing the state in the case, confirmed Maulidi’s withdrawal.
“We didn’t even go to court because Maulidi told us that he has withdrawn from the matter. The case was supposed to be held before Senior Resident Magistrate Jack Nriva today,” said Kayira.
