Super League of Malawi (Sulom) says it is not sure when the new season will kick off. This comes after the body has postponed the date for the kick off twice.
In December last year Sulom president Henry Chibowa was quoted in the press as saying the season would start on January 15.
Later this was changed to February 1.
But Sulom general secretary Chris Kamphinda Banda on Monday said the body is still waiting for the regional leagues to identify champions.
“Our stand still remains what is in the press release that ‘the league will start when all the sponsorship logistical arrangements are finalised’...and we have not yet heard from the regional leagues,” he said.
Kamphinda Banda said the date for starting the season will be known after Saturday when the regional champions are supposed to communicate on whether they have the financial muscle to be in the league.
In the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) Cobbe Barracks are the champions while Karonga ADD (Kradd) are reigning kings in the North.
The Central Region is yet to conclude its league but Eagles Beaks, a Police club, is leading the pack.
The delay in kicking off has also led to speculations that Sulom is buying time so that champions Bakili Bullets, who are embroiled in administrative and financial problems, put their house in order.
“The people who are making such allegations are the same ones who want to label us disorganised. That is not true. How can we start the league without other teams?” asked the GS.
Kamphinda Banda also dismissed rumours that Sulom has found a new sponsor to replace former president Bakili Muluzi.
“I hear it from the media. Dr. Muluzi will tell us on his own when time comes that he can no longer sponsor the Super League. But as of now he is still sponsoring it,” said Kamphinda Banda.
