Chiradzulu murders resurface
by Pilirani Semu-Banda , 25 January 2005 - 11:14:22
Families in Nguludi, Chiradzulu are living in fear after at least nine people were murdered while others, including two children, were seriously wounded in separate attacks.
The incidents, according to people in Mtapu, Makunami and Mlanjira villages, started last November and have since increased.
Investigations by Nation Online revealed that an 11-year-old girl, Triphonia Golden was attacked about five metres from her mother’s house on November 3 as they were returning from a wedding with her elder sister during early evening hours.
Golden, who was in the company of her mother during the interview, said on Monday she was grabbed and ripped in the stomach and that her assailants run away after she screamed with pain.
“I had to hold my intestines which were spilling out until my mother and father came and tied me up,” said Golden, displaying a big scar on her stomach.
Golden’s mother Anna Leonard said her daughter was taken to Nguludi Hospital where she was admitted for three weeks.
“We’re yet to pay K4,000 out of the K7,000 the hospital charged us and we only have to feed Triphonia soft food and this is really causing us a lot of trouble but we thank God that she survived,” said Leonard.
She said a day after Golden was stabbed, another man named Makwetu was murdered and dumped in Chisombezi River with his intestines out.
In Mlanjira Village, Nation Online heard that a man named Malika was stabbed to death last week.
And in Makunami Village, residents said a man named Mulema was also ripped apart and died.
Police in the district said they could not comment on the matter saying officers from their headquarters in Lilongwe have been to the area and are now handling the matter.
Police spokesman Willie Mwaluka was reported to be out for other duties and his two cellular telephones were indicating that he was out of reach.
Since 2001, mysterious murders have been reported from Chiradzulu with women having their private parts and eyes removed.
