Escom escapes the chop
by Garry Chirwa, 12 January 2005 - 10:40:25
Super Escom, which was one of the four relegation-threatened clubs, has escaped the chop from the top flight Super League and will replace MDC United which has since disbanded, Sulom executive decided at the weekend.
A press release issued by Sulom on Tuesday and signed by its president Henry Chibowa, general secretary Chris Kamphinda Banda and chairman of the league’s legal affairs and disciplinary committee George Bakuwa partly read: “Super Escom FC, having finished with the most points amongst the teams that were supposed to have been relegated from the league, shall replace MDC United FC, which has since disbanded.”
But in a separate interview Chibowa said the fate of the other relegation threatened teams will be determined by the response from regional leagues on whether their respective champions will be able to join and sustain themselves in the flagship league.
“However, in the event that the regional league champions fail to join the Super League for any reasons, the best team or teams in the relegation zone, as the case may be, and as per the final log table of the previous season, shall be picked to replace the said regional league champions who were supposed to have joined the league,” Chibowa pointed out.
He added: “We expect this information and confirmation to be communicated to Sulom secretariat by January 29, 2004,” said Chibowa.
The press release also stated that the league’s launch will be held in Lilongwe and that the season shall kick-off when all the sponsorship logistical arrangements are finalised.
The Sulom executive also agreed that its secretariat should as a matter of urgency prepare and submit to the prospective new entrants, the minimum requirements of expenditure in the league apart from the obvious and normal affiliation fees.
It was also agreed by Sulom executive that Sulom shall be the overall overseer of all security and other related matters stating that these issues shall be adequately covered in the Rules and Regulations of the League.
The Sulom brass further agreed that it should in the course of the season ensure that it holds an annual general meeting (AGM), funds permitting.
