While Sulom is scheduled to meet Super League clubs and regional leagues to discuss the composition of the Super League in the forthcoming season, Southern Region and Northern Region champions Cobbe Barracks and Kradd Eagles are still in the dark on whether they will be able to play in the flagship league.
Sulom president Henry Chibowa said the league has still not got the feedback from the regional leagues on whether their respective champions will be able to play in the top league.
“We asked all the teams as well as the regional champions through their leagues to make a commitment but up to now we have not heard anything from the regional leagues.
“We have therefore asked them for a meeting tomorrow (Friday) in order to ask them where they stand. We are about to start and therefore we have to move forward,” said Chibowa.
Malawi Army sports officer John Kaputa said on Thursday that they have still not received any communication from Cobbe on whether the team intends to join the Super League.
“What was supposed to happen was that the Southern Region Football League (SRFL) was supposed to officially communicate with Cobbe and in turn the club should have communicated to us so that we can come up with a decision, but so far there is nothing,” said Kaputa.
Karonga ADD, who are sponsors of Kradd Eagles, said on Thursday that they are still in the dark on whether they will be able to participate in the top flight league.
The division’s programme manager Emmanuel Ching’amba said the club has not yet got responses from prospective donors.
“We are still waiting to hear from our prospective donors otherwise it would be unrealistic to say we are ready for the league as of now. But having said that, I am sure by Saturday, we should be in a better position to know,” said Ching’amba.
On the other hand, the Central Region league’s general secretary Paul Mzungu said the league has still not yet identified the champions.
“Our situation is tricky because our league might end later this month and yet Sulom would like to know our position by this weekend.
“Perhaps we will discuss the matter with Sulom when we meet them at the weekend,” said Mzungu.
Apollo, who are sponsored by a Lilongwe-based business magnet Bini Josaya Banda, are the current leaders of the league.
Josaya-Banda himself stressed on Thursday that he is ready to bankroll his club in the Super League should they emerge champions.
“I can do it, why not? I have been sponsoring this team for the past 10 years and I believe I have the resouces to support it even in the Super League,” said Banda.
When reminded that the Super League is a different stage altogether and therefore more demanding, Josaya-Banda confidently said: “It doesn’t really matter. When my team wins, sometimes I give them even K8,000 to share amongst themselves, so what can stop me from sponsoring them in the Super League?” |
