Caps join race for Kamwendo
by Garry Chirwa, 29 December 2004 - 11:23:58
Zimbabwe’s Premier League champions Caps United have joined the race for MTL Wanderers’ red-hot property Joseph Kamwendo and their director Twine Phiri is expected in the country this week to negotiate for a loan with the nomads.
Caps’ wealthy director and owner Phiri confirmed in a telephone interview from Harare on Monday that his club is desperately eying the teenage midfield maestro.
“I was scheduled to fly there today [Wednesday] but I have changed my schedule and I should be coming there either on Thursday or Friday.
“I want to get the boy on loan, he is such a marvellous player but and I am sure he can make a big impact in our Caf Champions League campaign,” said Phiri whose club is also chasing former Bakili Bullets captain Peter ‘Mjojo’ Mponda.
Phiri said Caps have set their eyes on Kamwendo to fill the big boots of their Zambian star Ian Bakala’s whose loan has since expired and his club Kabwe Warriors has since sold him to an Angolan club Petro Atletico.
“We have already made contacts with the player [Kamwendo] through Felix Ngamanya Sapawo who acts as our agent that side and it seems the boy is interested, but as I said, we have to follow the procedures and talk to his club first,” said Phiri.
The Caps’ boss also said he will take advantage of his trip to make a follow-up on the issue of Mponda who is involved in a row with his former club.
“It is important that the issue of Peter should be sorted out because I am afraid time is running out and he has to join the team in preparation for the Champions League,” said Phiri.
Kamwendo confirmed that he had a meeting with Sapawo on the prospects of a move to the Zimbabwean giants.
“I told him that I am ready to join Caps and that if an offer comes up, I will definitely consider it because it would be a stepping stone to greater heights.
“Caps has a reputation of finding lucrative deals for its players in Europe and South Africa and I wouldn’t toy around with such an opportunity,” said Kamwendo who was recently linked with a move to Silver Strikers.
He added: “For now I am back in Blantyre, I am still a nomad at the moment but I will see what comes up from the Caps issue.”
However, Wanderers’ general secretary Hannock Ng’oma said they have had no official communication from Caps.
“We have heard that Caps are interested but so far nothing concrete has come up, we have not had any communication from the club,” said Ng’oma.
Already Caps have another Malawian player Hadji Tambala whose performance was outstanding for the Harare-based outfit in the just ended season. Recently the club also expressed interest in Bullets coach Kinnah Phiri but made a U-turn after learning that he is on a two-year contract.
