Herbalist sues Health Minister, Ntaba
by Pilirani Semu-Banda, 16 December 2004 - 09:35:44
Herbalist George Kumbuyo, the man behind the Chambe concoction which he claims is a cure for HIV/Aids, has sued Minister of Health Hetherwick Ntaba.
Kumbuyo is seeking exemplary damages following reports that the minister has been alleging that some people developed symptoms of mental illness after taking the drug.
Kumbuyo’s lawyer Edwin Banda said on Wednesday he filed the matter in court on December 6 and that Ntaba signed for the summons against him on December 9.
Banda said the case is based on a seminar paper which Ntaba presented at the Southern African Editors Forum on HIV/Aids in Mangochi last month where he also indicated that he traced people who had been treated by Kumbuyo and found out that three of the five patients had developed mental illness.
“Mr. Kumbuyo has indicated that he will parade those five patients in court so that the court sees if they are insane or not,” said Banda.
The lawyer said Ntaba’s presentation was not balanced and that Kumbuyo was not given an opportunity to give his side of the story at the international conference.
Meanwhile court records indicate that Ntaba is challenging the matter.
Kumbuyo is on record as saying that he has been administering chambe for the past 12 years without “supposed side effects”.
