Malawinet offers wireless internet
by Henry Chilobwe, 12 December 2004 - 12:43:01

Malawinet, an internet service provider (ISP), has introduced wireless internet services to increase customers’ access to the internet and boost the use of information technology in the country.
Senior business development and operations manager for the ISP Munjal Jhala in an interview said the wireless internet is very viable in the country because “most locations in Malawi have poor telecommunication infrastructure”.
“Wireless internet is many times faster than the fastest cable modem and users will no longer experience busy signals,” he said.
Wireless internet uses radio waves while cable internet relies on telephone lines to send and receive information.
He further said the ISP hopes to minimise costs of access to internet as the facility does not require connection to telephone lines.
Currently, Malawinet is offering the services to Blantyre Limbe and Mpingwe areas.
The internet service provider intends to expand the service to other areas of the country in the near future.
Malawinet is the first company to provide internet services in the country. It was established in 1997.
