There is an atmosphere of uncertainty at Airport Development Limited (ADL) in Lilongwe where employees fear job losses at the end of a functional review underway at the company.
A source at the company said Wednesday that nearly 100 out of 223 employees, most of them junior staff, might lose their jobs at the end of the functional review early next year.
The review team has also recommended the abolition of six senior positions of deputy general manager, deputy financial controller, commercial manager, engineering manager and senior property manager. It has also recommended that all cleaners be laid off so that the company contracts a private cleaning firm. A few new positions are also going to be created, according to the source.
“We know that where functional reviews take place some employees lose their jobs,” said one of the employees minutes after a meeting between workers’ representatives and members of the management team.
But commercial manager, who is also the organisation’s spokesperson, Kate Yatina could neither deny nor confirm the alleged impending retrenchment saying the matter was being handled by the company secretary, who was in South Africa at the time of the interview.
“It is true that there is a functional review but I cannot say much because the process is not through,” she said.
The company’s chief executive Captain Lewis Mbilizi could not be reached for comment. Staff fear they could lose jobs as happened at Air Malawi and Malawi Housing Corporation where similar reviews took place.
ADL is one of the statutory corporations that are reportedly not doing well financially.
