Mvula at Chichiri Prison
by Pilirani Semu-Banda, 06 December 2004 - 09:37:46
A day after being discharged from hospital, UDF deputy research director Humphrey Mvula, who is under police custody on allegations of murder, was on Friday moved from Maula Prison in Lilongwe to Chichiri Prison in Blantyre.
Mvula’s relative, who did not want to be named, said the UDF guru was moved following requests by family members who want to visit him easily.
“All of us stay here and it’s difficult for us to travel all the time to see him in Lilongwe,” said the relative.
Police and prison spokespersons were out of reach on Sunday.
Media reports indicate that Damson Kathyola, hospital director for Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe where Mvula was admitted, has said that the suspect needs medical attention which “is only available abroad” and not in local hospitals.
He added that a doctor will be visiting him in prison.
Hospital specialist at the hospital Enrico Novelli had “strongly recommended” on November 26 that Mvula should be transferred to a facility where diagnostic and therapeutic manoeuvres could be performed after carrying out tests. The specialist also observed that Mvula has multiple risk factors for coronary artery disease and that his recent stroke “raises suspicion already”.
But Kathyola said on Thursday he discharged Mvula because “he’s physically fit to be discharged”.
