UDF regional governor (South) John Chikakwiya on Tuesday replaced three regional executive members who were suspended last week on accusations that they were reporting “lies” about party chairman Bakili Muluzi and his executive members to President Bingu wa Mutharika.
Party deputy regional governor Samson Msosa has been replaced by Abubakar M’baya, Lyana Tambala has replaced regional secretary (Women’s Desk) Beatrice Kanjala and Kennedy Kumtenga has replaced regional executive member Alefa Wenzulo.
But Msosa said he was still waiting for communication from the party national executive committee to discuss the issue and hear the side of the story of the suspended officials.
“I am sure those that have been appointed are simply holding the positions for us because party business has to continue even if we’ve been suspended,” said Msosa.
He said on Monday a meeting initially scheduled between the Nec and the suspended officials for that day had been rescheduled to Tuesday.
But he said even then the executive committee had not yet contacted them.
Making the announcement on behalf of Chikakwiya, party spokesman Salule Masangwi said he did not know whether the suspended party members will meet the Nec or not as he did not have much information on the issue.
Chikakwiya refused to give more details as well, saying it was only Masangwi who could speak on the matter.
Chikakwiya told a press briefing in Blantyre last week that Msosa, Kanjala and Wenzulo were suspended because “they are trying to bring confusion to the heartbeat of the UDF which is in the Southern Region”.
Chikakwiya also accused the trio of being at the forefront in writing anonymous letters to Muluzi last month calling for the formation of a task force to shake up the party.
Msosa argued soon after his suspension that his removal is against party protocol as it is only the National Executive Committee (Nec) that has powers to suspend people.
