A senior police officer in Dedza has been arrested for allegedly raping the wife of an armed robbery suspect.
The woman was picked in place of her husband who is on the run.
Sources from the Police told The Nation that Medison Mankhwala, a senior officer at Linthipe police, was arrested last Friday for committing the alleged act.
Deputy police spokesperson Kelvin Maigwa said in an interview he heard about the issue “but I can’t confirm officially because I need to check with the officials at Linthipe Police”.
Said Maigwa: “Yes, I heard that somewhere”.
The sources said Mankhwala picked the woman (name withheld) from her house in place of her husband who has been on the run for some time.
“When he was interviewing her in the CID (criminal investigations department) office, Mankhwala told the woman that he could release her if she accepted to have sex with him. The woman resisted but since they were two of them he closed the door and raped her,” alleged the source.
The source said the woman complained to the police and the police officer was later arrested.
Mankhwala was still in police custody at Linthipe Police as of Monday.
He is expected to be taken to court today to be charged with rape and abuse of office.
Maigwa refused to comment whether it’s normal to arrest someone in place of somebody.
