A man stabbed his wife to death and then killed himself too in a catechist’s office at Montfort Parish in Blantyre.
The catechist, Edwin Mkoka, explained in an interview on Thursday that John Makhungwa and his wife came to his office in the morning for counselling on a family dispute.
“They were living separately after the husband burnt a house in which they were living at Mitsidi,” said Mkoka.
He said the husband still wanted to be together with his wife who was no longer interested.
“Since they were both members of Mitsidi Catholic Church, they went there for the church to sort out their family disputes and the matter was referred to us,” said Mkoka.
He said after realising the seriousness of the disputes he went to call the parish priest Fr Lawrence Simbota.
He said the priest advised him to tell the couple to come with their family advisors.
“When going back I was failing to open the door. I forced it open and found the husband had stabbed his wife to death, then stabbed himself,” said the catechist.
The police collected the bodies and dropped them at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
Police spokesperson Willie Mwaluka confirmed the case but said the police could not give immediate details.
A source at the hospital, who sought anonymity, confirmed receiving the bodies from the police.
