Queens, Tigresses register big scores
by Oris Chimenya, 08 November 2004 - 11:16:02
As the K1.4 million ($13,888) Stanbic Bank national netball tournament entered its second week last weekend, the country’s arch-rivals MTL Queens and Admarc Tigresses on Saturday shone with dazzling glitter when they recorded the big margins with their respective opponents.
In a match played at the Blantyre Sports Club, last season’s losing finalists Admarc Tigresses whacked their colleagues Blantyre Socials 52-0, while the Queens, who are defending champions, massacred hosts Lirangwe 93-1 before brushing aside fellow visitors from Thyolo, Satemwa Stars by 73-3.
Lirangwe retrieved some pride when they beat Satemwa 16-10 in a match that was also marred by heavy rains.
The two matches involving the defending champions were the first to be played after getting two free points following the failure by Satemwa Sisters to show up for their season opener last week.
MTL Queens coach Patricia Kaliyati said in an interview on Sunday the winning margin could have been greater than it was if there was no rain.
“There was heavy rain and we played two 20-minute quarters only because we could not proceed,” she said.
But defender for the Blantyre Socials Abigail Sheriff attributed their embarrassing loss to poor turn up by players.
“It was so disastrous because most of our team members were in offices on Saturday, that’s why we failed to catch up with the Tigresses’ pace.
“But we are sure that next time, we shall beat them and they will also know that Blantyre Socials can also register a mark against them,” she said.
The present tournament, which is second to be sponsored by Stanbic Bank this year, started last week and is expected to end in the second week of December this year.
