Dumbo packs his bag ready for prison
by Pilirani Semu-Banda, 02 November 2004 - 18:50:19
Former Water Development Minister Dumbo Lemani said on Tuesday his agents within government have tipped him of a warrant of arrest which the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has issued against him.
He added that he has since cancelled a trip to the United Kingdom (UK) today for fear of being arrested at the airport.
Lemani, who had a travelling bag packed with his pyjamas, toothbrush, toothpaste, sandals, a UDF yellow T-Shirt and insecticide in readiness for the arrest, however said he did not know what he is being arrested for.
He said he is sure of his pending arrest because the people who have tipped him, also warned the UDF “well in advance” that the ruling party spokesman Humphrey Mvula and former Finance Minister Friday Jumbe would be arrested.
“I have been carrying my bag for some days now because I don’t want to be very uncomfortable when I got to court but I am now getting tired now of carrying my things around. I want to be arrested as soon as possible,” said Lemani.
He said he has cancelled the trip to the UK because he does not want to go through what Jumbe experienced when he got arrested at Chileka International Airport as he was about to board a plane to South Africa.
He said he has since sent his son to transact the business he has in the UK.
“I don’t want to be arrested on Friday because I get busy with constituency work over the weekend,” he said.
Lemani also said he has already hired lawyers Kalekeni Kaphale and Tamanda Chokhotho to represent him when he get arrested.
However Kaphale said he could not comment on the warrant of arrest because he did not know of it as a fact.
“Of course I have acted for him in other cases so it’s not surprising that he wants me as his lawyer,” said Kaphale.
DPP Ishmael Wadi could not be reached for comment as he is reported to be on best rest following a surgery.
And senior state Advocate Pacharo Kayira said he did not know whether there is a warrant of arrest against Lemani because he is on leave.
