Football player out on bail
by Oris Chimenya, 02 November 2004 - 08:35:49
Illovo defender Matembo Msowoya has been released on bail a week after fiscal police in Blantyre arrested him for being found in possession of nine passports and travelling cheques worth US $25,000 (K2.7 million).
The player was arrested as he was about to board a luxurious Shire Buslines bus at the Wenela Bus depot.
A source at Blantyre Police station confirmed the development on Monday but declined to give more details.
The source, who kept the information to “respect protocol”, could also not give the bail amount and the conditions attached to it.
Police spokesperson Willie Mwaluka confirmed the bail on Monday saying the it was given on October 27 two days after his arrest.
But Department of Immigration public relations officer Bryson Bendala said their investigations suggest that the player wanted to use the passports and the certificates of identifications to obtain more travellers cheques.
“Maybe he wanted to cash more money from money bureaux...money he could not cash with his passport only. But the fiscal police are investigating the matter,” said Bendala, who added that he did not find out where the player wanted to go to.
Said Bendala: “These passports were loosely obtained and there was no faking whatsoever on his side and we as the Immigration Department, came in to find out whether the passports were forged or not.”
According to Bendala, the passports belong to Muzipasi Mwangonde, Alex Kamwendo, Thomson Gondwe, Benard Kalilani, Andrew Kabambe while the certificates of identification were in his name and Dominick and Isaac Msowoya, both believed to be his brothers.
