UDF regional governor for the South John Chikakwiya has been excommunicated from Ndirande Seventh Day Adventist church, Nation Online has learnt.
Sources say the congregation was told of the decision last Saturday.
The sources add that this follows remarks that Chikakwiya made at former president Bakili Muluzi’s rally in Bangwe, Blantyre that Malawi would experience genocide if UDF politicians are not respected.
In an interview on Monday, Chikakwiya, while confirming the excommunication, refused to shed more light on the issue.
“What you should know is that these church people are jealous people because [the excommunication] really doesn’t make sense to me,” said Chikakwiya adding: “Go ask [the church] why they excommunicated me, I can’t say much.”
The church’s pastor, a Mbewe, also refused to comment on the issue, saying it is against the church’s rules.
“This is a church issue therefore, I cannot say anything,” said Mbewe.
Centre for Human Rights and Rehabilitation (CHRR) in a press release last month condemned Chikakwiya for threatening the country’s security following the threats of genocide.
But Muluzi’s spokesman Sam Mpasu said this was not a threat and that CHRR got it out of context.
