The K100,000 Kas Freight Chess League defending champions Genius last Saturday continued their unbeaten record when they registered their 12th and 13th wins to bring their points tally to 39.
The chess giants, whose 11 games in the first round brought them to the top, on Saturday humbled unlucky C-Kings 5-0 before whacking Chilomoni with the same margin.
The games marked the beginning of the second round after a two-week break.
The wins put a six-point gap between them and their pursuers Limbe, who have 33 points from 12 games. On position three are Castles with 21 points from 11 games while Chancol are fourth with 18 points from the same number of games.
Limbe’s last win was Saturday’s 5-0 victory over C-Kings while Chilomoni went to lose 0.5 to 4.5 points to Ndirande Gambits.
General secretary for the Southern Region Chess League (SCL) Gilton Mkumbwa said in an interview Monday Genius will face fourth-placed Chancol this Saturday at the Police College in Zomba.
“There will also be a game between Genius and the hosts while in Blantyre, the action will be between Chilomoni and Ndirande Youth as Castles will be taking on Chirimba at the Polytechnic,” he said.
Polytechnic have failed to fulfil their fixtures since they hosted the University of Malawi Students Union (Umsu) sports festival last month.
“The students claim they are busy with examinations but we are yet to meet them to discuss where we can best place them so that they are comfortable,” said Mkumbwa.
Polytechnic’s failure is a repeat of last season in which they also disturbed the fixture calendar, a development which forced the committee to shift the closing date of the league.
The league was initially scheduled to end in December but the committee has been forced to shift the closing month to January due to the two tournaments Bumas national tournament and the Stanbic Bank national individual Open that have to be played before this year closes.
If Polytechnic fail to turn up for their fixtures in the next two weeks, may now also extend the league’s closing month to February.
