Charles Merrick on Saturday showed why he is Blantyre Sports Club golf captain by winning the Packaging Industries (Malawi) Limited Invitational tournament with a nett 43 at Mulanje Golf Club.
That top place earned him a trophy and a combined microwave and grille.
“The feel-good factor is there. This is one way of appreciating PIM’s invitation. I knew it was going to be a good day immediately after three holes when I started hitting pars. I played a short tactical game with good drives,” said Merrick, who also praised the course and the cool weather.
Second placed Nelson Njikho had to ease Gilbert Chirwa into third after a countback following a tie on 39 nett. Njinkho got a trophy and coffee maker while Chirwa was rewarded with barbecue grille.
Roza Mbilizi, who chalked 34 nett, scooped the women’s top prize of a cake mixer. However, without taking the limelight from Mbilizi, it was Lucy Ganiza who stole the show and had the men clearly embarrassed when she hit the longest drive of the tournament.
“It was unbelievable. Whether it was a fluke or not, for a person to hit an eagle on a par four (two club), it’s just unbelievable,” commented veteran golfer Erasmas Chirambo also known as ‘Etc’.
Ganiza was presented with a bread toaster.
Keisha Ndhlovu and Zimani Kadzamira were nearest the pin, while Ganiza and Chicago Phiri registered the longest drives. Ndhlovu also had the best front while Tony Leitao won the best back prize. Mike Gwembere won the ‘most golf’ prize.
Speaking after the prize presentation, PIM managing director Simon Itaye thanked the 38-trong field which had been invited to patronise the event, some of whom came from as far as Zomba.
“We would also like to thank the tea estates for the business support they give us and we assure you that we are addressing the problems you have been facing,” said Itaye, who also disclosed that they are in the process of certifying their products with the International Service Organisation (ISO).
PIM manufactures tobacco cases, commercial corrugated cartons, liquid packaging, tea sacks, toilet tissues, lunch boxes, flat bags, egg trays and cement sacks.
The competition was played on stableford format. |
