BB tag Mponda at K5m
by Oris Chimenya, 25 October 2004 - 09:06:55
Bakili Bullets Sunday said they are looking for US$50,000 as transfer fee money for their former defender-cum-midfielder Peter Mponda to Zimbabwean club Caps United.
Disclosing the news in an interview, Bakili Bullets chairman Hassam Jussab said the price tag was reached at during an executive meeting they held on Sunday.
“We have invested much in Mponda and that is why we came up with this charge. Caps United have to pay it before Mponda starts playing for them.
“But they should not be scared because this amount is negotiable and they are free to approach us,” said Jussab.
Mponda left for Zimbabwe on Thursday last week without an international clearance certificate from Football Association of Malawi (Fam).
But Bullets general secretary Ophman Kondowe accused Caps Sunday of delay saying they have not yet contacted them on Mponda’s move.
“We wonder why Caps wrote to Fam asking the body to clear Mponda without contacting us even once. We are still in the dark.
“We don’t even have the details of Mponda’s move to Caps, whether he is moving for one-year or two years and that is why the price is negotiable,” said Kondowe.
He said they do not want to block Mponda’s move to greener pastures but they want to follow procedures for international transfers.
In a separate interview Sunday, Mponda’s locally based manager Chris Kandulu said it was too early for him to comment on the issue.
“I don’t know anything because I haven’t been officially communicated to on that. I will comment when we are ready but not at the moment,” said Kandulu.
He said the last time he talked to his client was last week Wednesday and doubted if the player got the news that he had been valued at K5.4 million because he is already in Zimbabwe.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that during their negotiations Caps offered Mponda US$12,000 signing-on fee, a furnished flat, insurance cover and quite an attractive salary which was not disclosed.
Meanwhile, Bullets vice treasurer Kondi Msungama returned home Sunday from Zambia where he went to apply for visas for midfielders Fischer Kondowe and Robert Ng’ambi and goalkeeper Swadick Sanudi in whom Nigerian club Enyimba have expressed interest.
