Clergy demand results on corruption fight
by Emmanuel Muwamba, 25 October 2004 - 08:52:14
The clergy on Saturday told President Bingu wa Mutharika that the country is looking forward to results if the zero tolerance for corruption, transparency and accountability are to be achieved.
Reverend Geoffrey Matoga, who was one of the leaders of worship at a thanksgiving interdenominational prayer service at Njamba Freedom Park in Blantyre told the President to seek God’s intervention in dealing with issues affecting the nation.
But in an indirect reference to the clergy’s call, Mutharika said his vision is to fight corruption and poverty.
“But now people are coming to me saying I should slow down on corruption yet some months ago they were saying no to corruption. Why are you coming to me saying I am threatening people,” he questioned. “Help me to lead the country properly.”
Matoga said the suffering the country is facing today has not come from God but from evil.
“Today people come to positions to acquire fame and wealth. But God is looking for people that can sacrifice for the benefit of others and not at the expense of others,” he said.
He appealed to the people in authority to have clear moral conscience so that the country can be guided by God.
“Don’t rely on the past and your PhDs but seek wisdom to distinguish between liars and those that tell the truth,” he said.
Father Edward Masauko branded himself as a preacher who does not fear but the one who counsels and teaches all including the executive, legislature, the judiciary and even the clergy.
He wondered why some parties in the country follow a person and not their ideologies.
“Some do not differentiate a party from government and they even despise the president,” he noted
He said the country is in corruption, bribery and theft today because in 1994 we chose a government of thieves which competed against murderers.
Masauko explained that going back to God, finding our own philosophy and ganging up against corruption are solutions to problems facing the country.
There were no officials from PPM, Mgode, MCP and MDP. According to Fr Boniface Tamani, MDP President Kamlepo Kalua excused himself from the service because he was addressing a rally in Lilongwe.
