Sports Minister Henry Chimunthu Banda has set up a 14-man task force to investigate and advise on how best to deal with the rising rate of football related violence.
Deputy director of sports in the Ministry of Sports Justin Saidi said yesterday that the task force, which among others includes lawyers, sports and football administrators, journalists and law enforcers, will be chaired by Jabbar Alide.
“The first meeting has been scheduled for Saturday morning at Sports Council offices in Blantyre where the minister himself will be in attendance,” said Saidi.
He said the deputy mayor of the City of Blantyre Isaac Nyakamera is the vice chairman while Sports Council boss George Jana is the secretary.
The other members are lawyers Meyer Chisanga and George Bakuwa, journalists Duncan Mlanjira, Kelvin Moyo, Garry Chirwa and Steve Liwewe Banda, Consumers Association of Malawi (Cama) executive director John Kapito, Sulom head Henry Chibowa, Fam general secretary Roosevelt Mpinganjira, senior assistant commissioner of Police Chakunkhulira and Major Jalale.
The minister was forced to set up the task force following the violence that occurred during and after last Saturday’s Caf Champions League qualifier between Bakili Bullets and Enyimba of Nigeria at Kamuzu Stadium.
Twenty-nine vehicles including the Bullets’ team bus were stoned and several people were injured in the mayhem.
A Blantyre City Assembly employee Edison Raphael, one of the victims of the ugly scenes, is still battling for his life at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital.
