| No more ‘matola’ for UDF vehicles |

The UDF has warned all holders of party vehicles that it will impound any vehicle found carrying illegal passengers or doing any job other than for the party and deal with the culprits.
UDF Treasurer General Khumbo Kachali, who sent the letters of warning to all party officials, said Friday the party has realised that there is gross abuse of vehicles in most districts and in some instances some vehicles have been painted in other colours.
“We have given instructions for any senior party member to impound any vehicle not doing the right thing and report the matter directly to me. We have identified and warned several district governors already and we have told them that this is a last warning. If found again we will take stern measures against them,” said Kachali.
He could not elaborate what measures the party would take.
He said a lot of people have been abusing the vehicles but the party could not act because of the May 20 general elections.
“There were cases where there could be a funeral in a district. Instead of the vehicle helping at the funeral it could carrying matola or doing other things not beneficial to the people,” added Kachali.
The UDF has been at logger heads with some officials who argued that they use the vehicles for matola because the party does not give them enough money to maintain the vehicles.
But Kachali said there was no way the party could be releasing money for the vehicles without any valid reasons.
He said the vehicles are provided for whenever there was a need by the party to use them.
The UDF has vehicles in all the districts which are used by district governors and other party officials.
The party is on record as having said all the vehicles belong to its chairman Bakili Muluzi, who is now under probe from the Director of Public Prosecution after reports that the former president abused his tax exemption privilege to buy duty-free scores of vehicles, some of which were given to the party. |
