Law society hails Kaliwo appointment
by Mc Donald Chapalapata, 20 September 2004 - 19:26:22
The Malawi Law Society (MLS) has hailed the appointment of lawyer Gustave Kaliwo as director of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), saying he is an upstanding and seasoned legal practitioner and best person for the job.
MLS secretary Linda Ziyendam’manja said in a statement Kaliwo has been appointed on merit.
“The Malawi Law Society is pleased with the choice of Mr Kaliwo, who is an upstanding and seasoned legal practitioner and who has demonstrated integrity, diligence, commitment and professionalism in the practice of law throughout his career,” said Ziyendam’manja.
The lawyers’ body also said Kaliwo’s experience has not only be limited to law but he also rose to the post of deputy police commissioner in the police service.
“We hold Mr Kaliwo in the highest esteem and we have all the confidence that he is the best person for the job. We believe Mr Kaliwo will give more than 100 percent to the president’s zero tolerance on corruption,” she said.
The lawyers also commended the appointment of Gaston Mwenelupembe as Chief Prosecutor for the Bureau, saying they have all the confidence that Mwenelupembe’s years at the state advocate chambers give him relevant experience needed for the job.
MLS also commended president Bingu wa Mutharika for ‘overhauling’ the country’s public institutions and the stance he has taken on corruption.
“By surrounding himself with new blood and star performers in key positions regardless of political affiliation, the President has assured himself of the support of the nation and we hope he maintains that position for the good of Malawi,” said Ziyendam’manja.
President Mutharika has, since being sworn in as Malawi’s third president, appointed Ralph Kasambara as a Attorney General, Ishmael Wadi as Director of Public Prosecutions, Mark Chiziko as Army Commander and Mary Nangwale as the first woman Inspector General of Police.
