In March last year, French Cultural Centre (FCC) hosted a Ugandan group Percussion Discussion Africa which played authentic African ethnic music and just recently, Malawian sampled yet another talent from Africa — from Senegalese music maestro, Ismael Lo.
And this time around, it is the turn for Nigerians to take the floor. Ijodee Dance Company is storming FCC on Sunday to showcase a Nigerian contemporary dance, Ori (which means the head).
The group, headed by founder Adedayo Liadi, is currently on an Africa tour in such countries as South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Burundi, Uganda and Rwanda
Ori is an African symbolic representation of destiny or the head. It is a sacred exposition of the African myth regarding the destiny of all during and after creation.
In Ori, creator, Liadi, a choreographer, dancer, percussionist and acrobat, uses traditional dance and music as imaginary sources or as a glossary for his compositions. The choreography is based on a multiple influences and styles.
According to Nadine Ndabemeye, public relations officer for FCC, the concert has been organised as a cultural exchange programme.
“We would like Malawians to sample what other countries can offer in terms of tradition,” she says.
In Sunday’s performance, Ijodee Dance Company will be curtain raised by Sambang’oma Dance Troupe.
