DPP probes Sheikh Bugidad death
by Mc Donald Chapalapata, 30 August 2004 - 12:29:30
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Ishmael Wadi has said he is probing the death of Sheikh Abdul Hamid Bugidad of Liwonde who died after being attacked by suspected UDF Young Democrats about three years ago.
Wadi said in an interview at the weekend some sheikhs from Liwonde approached him last week and asked if he could investigate the death of Bugidad.
“I was approached by these people and they were concerned that nothing was done on the matter and asked me if I could investigate the issue. I have opened a file for the case,” said Wadi.
The late Bugidad was stabbed and severely beaten by suspected UDF Young Democrats in June 2001 and later died as a result of the attack.
Bugidad lead a group of Muslims who were arrested at the gates of Sanjika Palace in Blantyre when they wanted to petition former president Bakili Muluzi over differences between Kadalia and its rival Sukut sects in the Muslim faith.
He was so critical of Muluzi and his government and was attacked on several occasions because of his stand against the UDF.
